I grew up in Newark, N.J. in the 60’s and 70’s without a whole lot of promise because I was steeped in poverty consciousness. At the age of 21, I was stuck in a bad relationship, I chain smoked, and lived by myself in a tiny run-down trailer without heat.  I slept on a borrowed mattress in my jeans because I was freezing. Bugs crawled across my bed as I curled up under a thin blanket. My menial job gave me enough money to buy only one protein meal a week. My life was small, depressing, and stricken with LACK.

At the time, I thought that this would be my life. This is how I would exist from day to day until the day I left the earth. I had no idea that there was something better out there, or that I even had CHOICE in the matter.
